About The Artwork
There are so many hiking trails all over Arizona, it's hard to imagine ever seeing even a fraction of them. On one such hike in the Saguaro National Park in Tucson, I ran across multiple giants. But this one with its buds ready to burst was extra special. This trek happened in April. The winds were beginning to warm considerably and blew us dry in minutes without a couple liters of water in hand. Such bright blue skies and lush green saguaros are such a delight to venture through. I creates paintings about emotional space, shape, color, and pattern. With a painterly style, I carefully build up impasto layers, using wet-on-wet oil paint techniques and allowing shards of underpainting to show through. Formally, the pieces are about composition, color harmonies, shape, and texture, yet each piece reveals a sensory connection to the landscape around him, and a dynamic interplay between conscious and subconscious thought.
