Desert No. 6 Painting

A good friend of mine who enticed me to move the the Sonoran Desert of Arizona is a huge cactus enthusiast. His yard will someday be the featured attraction in Corona de Tucson. I often shoot photographs of inspirational plants. I just had to paint one of his! The artwork also has some Japonisme influence seen in the huge sun in the background. The flat picture plane of the painting also speaks to 20th century graphic design and illustration. And finally, the scumbling of the background references blue sky and modernism. I create paintings about emotional space, shape, color, and pattern. With a painterly style, I carefully builds up impasto layers, using wet-on-wet oil paint techniques and allowing shards of underpainting to show through. Formally, the pieces are about composition, color harmonies, shape, and texture, yet each piece reveals a sensory connection to the landscape around him, and a dynamic interplay between conscious and subconscious thought.
