Doktor Boromeus Painting

Boromeus, or Doctor Boromeus, the director, had no secrets, as everyone knew, and as long as things were going in a predictable direction, there was no problem. Except, of course, when something unexpected happened. When he left home in the morning, he would ask what was being cooked for lunch. Meat soup, boiled beef with horseradish and pancakes. Boromeus memorized the words well, then asked if the meat would be served with potatoes or rice. Potatoes. The manager said goodbye and left. At lunchtime, he sat down quietly to lunch, no one would have suspected that changing the menu would embarrass him. If, for some reason, rice or even stewed semolina were prepared instead of potatoes, he would look at the food with puzzlement, standing up in confusion. He said it would be potatoes, he said. Oh no, that's not what we were cooking. Boromeus then went to his room, paced around for minutes, sat down, read something, and only returned when the idea of eating rice or semolina instead of potatoes had become familiar to him.
