About The Artwork

Since I started drawing, I wanted to have my own painting style. Now I am studying painting using Korean ink and Korean paintbrushes. After I choose a painting that I like, apply Dancheong colors, and make it symmetrical, I encounter an unexpected third painting. This way of working gives me fun and surprise.

‘A time when it shines beautifully like a flower’ I was born in 1978 in Gochang, a warm southern part of South Korea, close to the seafront. There, with its beautiful climate, I could see and feel farmland and nature up close. There is something special about our hometown: Seonunsa Temple, a Buddhist temple built in the Baekje period in 577, and the fortresses built in the Joseon Dynasty in 1453. They provided me with a lot from childhood until I left my hometown. I enjoyed many games and adventures in the Hanok architecture and the forest there. It is also a good place to draw landscape paintings. There were various materials which were good for practicing watercolor painting. For example, old trees and streams, stones of fortresses, hanok buildings with dancheong paint, wooden pillars and beams that make up architecture, and the structure of roof tiles had a profound style with traces of time. If I look for a clear horizontal line that penetrates my life, it is stained glass. Since I was in my 30s, I have struggled with my own ambition to open a new art world with stained glasses and light. In order to make a stained glass work, the process of touching the colored glass, reflecting it on the light, cutting it, and rearranging it is repeated. In this process, the colorful appearance of the colored glass sculptures interacting with the light and showing every moment can be said to be like watching an attractive lover from the side. My return to painting work came from an encounter with a mysterious and charming flower one spring. Flowers' colors, shapes, and fates make you think and realize many things. Flowers are the most beautiful times for plants. They make gestures, showing off such lovely colors and appearances, to meet their mates. When love is achieved, petals fall and fruits with seeds are formed. The most beautiful time is to conceive a new life with a very short end. Everything in the universe has a fixed time and destiny. It is born, grows, ages, and annihilates. If we look at this more closely and simplify it, we can say that this world is a phenomenon that occurs when the three principles of collection, motion, and dispersion work repeatedly - I believe that only these three elements are immutable truths and are 'the major premise' that includes everything in the universe. Symmetry, or the repeated shapes of curves and colors, make it possible for a flower to be beautiful.
