Embrace Painting

"Embrace" is the result of a free painting session, where I allow my innermost feelings and ideas to emerge with intuitive and gestural interaction with the canvas. It started as a curious exploration of how different types and grades of cement textures would interact on canvas (smooth plaster and sanded cement), and as the form evolved and the layer of oil paint was added, these embracing figures started to emerge, dictated by the canvas itself rather than my intention. The highlight of gold foil as the final touch gives depth and counterpoint, and adds a spark of light. It was only much later that i realised: the embracing figures are themselves contained within the shape of a larger figure, the classic shape of a woman sitting from the back. The tenderness of the two figures entwining within the safe larger embrace evokes feelings of family, safety, maternity. It also explores themes of self-love -- all the figures are me. The smaller figures can be seen as different and distinct aspects of self that all have to be accepted and loved within the whole.
