About The Artwork

In this body of work, I aimed to translate Zen philosophy into contemporary art. It is harmony, acceptance and a memory of peace. In this work, these prayers are expressed using the shape of a heart, which is the most representative form of abstract expression. The composition depicts 2 souls intertwined to form 1 heart shape. The purpose of expressing global & timeless themes using extremely traditional techniques & materials in my work is to harmonize Western logical thinking with Eastern intuitive experience. I tried to express my infinite respect for all cultures. This work uses natural rock powder paints made from crushed natural gemstones such as Lapis-lazuli, Azurite, Malachite, Turquoise, Mica, and Crystal. Natural mineral pigments are the highest quality of traditional Japanese paints and have been used to decorate castles or temples. Traditionally in Japan, Azurite powder is used to create the blue color, but in this work, due to the artist's special commitment to blue color, precious Lapis-lazuli powder is also used. It contains a wish for good luck to ward off evil spirits. The work surface, the surrounding cardboard, and the frame are all colored by the artist, and it is defined that all 3 facial expressions come together to form a single work. The cardboard inside the frame is painted dark blue and decorated with Mica and Crystals. The picture frame is made of wood from the 90's, painted also dark blue and decorated with several types of colored gold leaf. ( The colored gold leaf on the frame is coated with acrylic resin, so it can be handled normally.) ( The display hardware has already been attached to the back.) ( For safety during transportation, the frame does not have protective glass or acrylic plates.) This work is on sale now.

I grew up in the mountainous region in Japan with traditional culture and Zen discipline. I aspired to be a painter from the age of 9, due to the deep influence of Japanese Ukiyo-E. I studied contemporary art in New York City from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. Since returning to Japan's mountainous countryside, I have tried to put art into practice in my daily life, including volunteering for art in the community and working as an arts representative for my hometown's city government. As a professional painter, I have been active throughout Asia since 2015, mainly in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan. I aim to create paintings that can touch people's hearts. I believe that beauty can encourage people who are experiencing unbearable sadness and suffering. I have been trying hard, but I haven't achieved anything yet. I would appreciate very much for your continued support for my artistic activities. Please check more details of my artistic activities : https://www.instagram.com/kanzanloc/
