About The Artwork

An Anamorphic Painting. A rhythmic fusion of two differing geometric forms which can only be perceived clearly when the onlooker occupies a particular angle or point of view. My anamorphic exploration began after moving from the UK to live in Italy, I began to discover that certain subjects culturally had different and even totally opposing values. Such as the number 13, which for the English is unlucky - yet considered lucky in Italy, a black cat is lucky in England - but unlucky in Italy. I began to explore this fusion of apparent opposites working with essential geometric forms and movements as the human mind is structured to recognize even search out these abstract elements without any emotional hook, so I play upon the anticipation of the observer as the perceived form gradually crystallizes before their eyes and in their mind. What I find particularly interesting and intriguing in the observer’s passage from one crystallized actuality to another are the states of fusion and emergence of the two contrasting geometries, and the fact that the two definitive interpretations are only latent fragments of the whole actual reality. These two opposing realities co-exist as a vibration awaiting the interaction of the viewer to assume one form or another. The geometric forms and background are painted as a series of combed strokes in a tight interweaving mesh as though the forms emerge or coagulate out of that vibrating space just as crystals grow in a saturated solution. It is painted on thick watercolour paper, concertinaed into a zig-zag surface. The painting is mounted closed in a shallow box type frame ; on a black plywood panel with brushed alluminium borders and clear acrylic sheet front. The frame may be hung on either hooks or wires. Total weight of mounted work 12.12 Lb Size of painting H 12 W 28.3 D 1.6 inches Size of Frame H 22 W 38.3 D 2 inches

I'm an English artist now living in Italy. I grew up in northern England, in Derbyshire. Having artist parents I grew-up being encouraged to observe everything around me. Living in a landscape surrounded by hills I was always curious to see what was on the other side of those hills, beyond those hills were others ; curiosity is an incessant stimulus. I studied art at Manchester Polytechnic, the London College of Printing, and the Royal College of Art. Concluding my studies for some years I worked for periods in studios in Italy and Norway, punctuated by returning to England to make and exhibit my own work, and tuitioring as visiting lecturer at Manchester Polytechnic and Wrexham College of Art & Design. In 1991 I joined the accademic staff at Manchester Metropolitan University, as Lecturer in Ceramics in the department of 3Dimensional Design. However in 1993 I took the decision to leave the post at Manchester to join my companion in Italy. Setting up my own studio I began working and exhibiting in my own right in Italy and abroad. My work is present in various contemporary art museums and pubblic collections and I have realizzed commissions for both organizzations and private clients.
