The phrase “Fama volat” originates from Latin, and it translates to “rumor flies” or “fame spreads quickly” in English. It reflects the rapid spread of news and reputation through word of mouth. The concept of “fama” in Latin literature is often associated with the spread of rumors and reputation, and it has been personified in various works of art and literature throughout ancient Rome and the Middle Ages. One of the most famous literary depictions of “fama” is in Virgil’s “Aeneid.” The painting captures four nymphs, keepers of nature’s secrets, in a moment of divine discovery in a garden of mysterious flowers. Each nymph reflects a facet of knowledge and wisdom. The first nymph, her golden hair sparkling, represents the novice. She is eager for wisdom, amazed by the revelation. She is also gullible, trusting everything. The second nymph, turned away, symbolizes reason. Her dark hair mirrors her logic. She listens carefully, questioning everything. She is also skeptical, not easily convinced. The central figure, radiant, embodies mastery. She reveals truths from ancient tales and cosmic whispers. Her words are golden threads. She is also confident, asserting everything. She is the leader and the teacher. The fourth nymph, smiling enigmatically, is intuition. Blonde yet mysterious; she knows without knowing. She is also playful, teasing and joking. She is the entertainer and the prankster. The landscape mirrors their journey – clear skies for clarity and truth, distant mountains for complexity and mystery. Flowers are enchanted microphones, broadcasting their secrets. The nymphs don’t know this. Sky is a giant screen, displaying and commenting on their conversation. The nymphs don’t know this. Mountains are giant speakers, amplifying and mocking their conversation. The nymphs don’t know this. And there you stand, an intruder and an invitee, invited deeper into secrets – where myth is lived and laughed at.
