About The Artwork

Place Once upon a time, the mood up in the sky gets stirred up after an immortality potion is crafted against the rules of the sky and the furnace that crafted it is destroyed. Bits of the hot furnace scatter into eight pieces and fall along the mountains that make up the edge of the desert. This is why this area is called the “Burning Mountains”. The mountains are extremely hot year-round and it is deadly to travel through them due to the lack of water. When pilgrims and traders enter the land of the burning mountains, the scorching heat of the mountains makes the roads impassable and the difficult roads of this terrain never seem to end. Time In ancient Oceanic beliefs, it is believed that lizards get into the human body with bad spirits and consume vital organs from the inside, therefore causing death while in Native American Folklore, with the positive roles they embody, they have a more two-sided role in the belief system. In Greek mythology however, they are interpreted quite differently: “Demeter searched for her daughter from the dawn of day to the coming of night and couldn’t find her. She was tired and thirsty, by chance, she came across a small hut and knocked on its door. An old lady came to the door and bought some water for the thirsty Demeter. While Demeter was drinking water, a spoiled kid [Ascalabus] mocked her. He asked his mother to bring another barrel of water. Demeter got frustrated and splashed some water on the kid, afterwards black spots appeared on his face and he turned into a lizard. The surprised woman, drowning in tears, bends down to touch the now transformed creature, but Ascalabus escapes through a hole into the mountains in order to hide”. Time has changed twice for Ascalabus, now he has to spend most of his time in the sun compared to humans and species living down below. As soon as the day downs, time stops and transforms into sunny environments.

Hello all! My name is Caner Karavit. I was born in Edirne and raised in Ankara. Currently, I live in Istanbul. Journey of my artistic outlook could be periodized in two stages. First, the contemporary art-related performances, paintings and printmakings that I executed with domestic and foreign art groups. This period corresponds to my higher art education at Istanbul Fine Arts Academy. In both group performances and individual works, the influence of the Western contemporary art, that I was provided during my art education, was intense. The themes of my Western-style contemporary art works were contributed by the layers of the cultural geography in which I was raised. Second stage is deeply affected by the Chinese art, on which I had education from 2007 on in China. During the first years of my presence in China, in Tsinghua University that I worked with a scholarship, I studied woodcut which is one of the oldest arts in China. In following years, I did research on Chinese Buddhist art and took lectures from Liu Hanshi who is a renowned Chinese painting master. These works and studies of mine rendered me with a comparison between the Western and Eastern art, and a synthesis of them both. Studying both of the artistic waves, not only I observed the differences in use of materials but also the differences in mindsets, with their artistic elements and installations. Accordingly, my studies in China changed my perspective towards the composition. The Chinese philosophy of time and space that influenced Chinese art, in turn predominantly influenced the abovementioned change in my understanding of composition. In this context, focusing on element of line, I reflect the places inversed to convert Chinese concept of time into space.
