About The Artwork

My inspiration for this painting came from Joan Mitchell. I had been reading her biography (Joan Mitchell, Lady Painter, A Life, by Patricia Albers), and fell in love with the beautiful brushstrokes and usage of color in her paintings. I learned Mitchell was eidetic (she relived emotional states in vivid detail) and a synesthete (colour and emotion were one and the same for her). My version of the painting initially took on a similar color composition. I loved the bold blues and yellows on the white background. Over the course of a few months, a new painting started to emerge from the old. I took charcoal and drew long arcing lines, then continued painting in some new shapes. Some brightly colored areas I held on to, and did not overpaint. I liked the balance of texture and layers, along with simple bold brushstrokes. It became a conversation. This is the stage when shapes resembling birds appeared in the composition, and the title 'Flight' emerged.

Cristina Getson is an abstract expressionist painter based in Toronto, Canada. After receiving her degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto and working as an engineer, she started taking evening art courses at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her love of expressing herself through painting became a permanent reality as she joined a studio collective, and started to pursue art full time. Working with acrylics, Cristina’s work is imbued with vibrant colours, and influenced by the pull of opposites - smooth and rough, light and dark, indefinite and detailed. It is a dialogue between past and present in order to capture not the physical aspects of a moment in time, but rather the feeling of it. The application of paint is made visible through the brushstrokes and marks left behind; it is a joyful revelling in the materiality of the paint itself. Cristina has exhibited in Canada and across the United States, and was accepted as an Artist-in-Residence at Palazzo Monti in Italy, in 2018.
