About The Artwork

Artist’s Statement: “I have been an abstract painter for over 30 years, and I can't exactly say what caused me to one night go to the studio and paint flowers, of all things. But of course, the 'template' of flowers in a vase is really just a basis, like any other, for color and form, and moving paint around. And I use unlikely color combinations as in my non-representational work, to create a pleasing level of dissonance. These flowers don't exist in nature - they came out of my head. So I can do pretty much anything I want to - I don't feel any more restricted than I do when I'm making abstract paintings. With this one, that "window" to the left drove me crazy for days. I just couldn't get to where I liked what I was putting in it - curtains, abstractions, all kinds of things. I even looked at Matisse for ideas. Nothing worked. Then out of nowhere came what's there now, reflecting what is going on with the flowers inside, and it all came together. That orange on the table is my tribute to Matisse and Cezanne. I didn't expect to continue painting these, but every one I've posted has sold, and I do really enjoy the challenges in doing them, so - here is another; probably my favorite so far." Framed in a maple floater frame, ready for hanging.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I have been selling my art worldwide since around 1990. For eight years I had a gallery on Magazine Street in New Orleans; I sold it in 2019 and moved everything online - which is where things seemed to be headed. My paintings are in fine collections from Beirut, to London, to mansions in Aspen and the California wine country. But it's important to me that the prices not rise to where they are unaffordable for collectors who are not wealthy; so I try to keep them reasonable. My influences include Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Julian Schnabel and Sean Scully. I have never been interested in the forms I choose for my paintings. I make quick decisions about them. What matters to me is surface quality, color, line quality, negative space. Sometimes the negative space is more important than the forms that push forward.
