About The Artwork

Part of new work exploring colour and the joy, beauty and complexities of womanhood. This piece is about what we hold, how we cope and flourish to inspire the next generation, mentor and lift each other as women. Layers upon layers were built up and worked into with various mark-making tools to create a rich surface history – metaphoric of our story evolving in this lifetime and the beauty in the scars of time. A female figure and dreamlike floating elements emerge – symbolic of memories, the roles we embody as daughters, sisters, mothers, friends, wives, grandmothers etc and the messages we’re told by others including the media on what it is to be a women. How we rework this in finding our true self and honouring our voices. The painting is signed on the front and the surface is protected with UV safe varnish. Ready to hang in an off-white tray frame.

Lisa Parkyn is a contemporary abstract artist based in East Devon – a far cry from the wilds of her African childhood. Lisa has always painted since she could hold a brush. Her grandmother painted the sparse expanses of the Namib dunes and her mother still paints in Botswana. After a career in graphic design in South Africa and London, she settled in Devon to raise a family and focus on painting. She has since been inspired by the untamed landscapes surrounding her – the Jurassic coastline, the vastness of Dartmoor and the Devon countryside throughout the seasons. Her studies in design, psychotherapy and world travels all influences her art as well. Her work includes references of landscape, flowers and figures and is linked to intuitive drawing, mark- making, layering as well as expressive and gestural brushstrokes. She primarily creates with acrylics, pastels, charcoal, and collage on canvas, paper, or wood. www.lisaparkyn.com www.instagram.com/lisaparkynart/
