I've done a few zebra related pieces before but as they're such a wonderful animal I wanted to dedicate more time on a larger piece of work. I set about researching these animals to get a better understanding of them so I could truly showcase their character in a painting. I found that there are three extant species of zebra, the Grévy’s, plains and mountain zebra. The plains and mountain zebras share similar social behaviours, they live in stable harems with one male and several adult females as well as foals, with the females only mating with their harem stallion. In contrast, Grévy’s zebra live either alone or in loosely associated herds, they establish a territory which attracts females, with this particular species of zebra being extremely promiscuous. I felt that I wanted to represent the Grévy’s zebra, as the odd one out in the trio. I wondered how I'd want my zebra to look, what his personality would be. I decided that he is quite cheeky, he's got a daring side and likes to take risks, he's not overly fussed if you don't like him because he likes himself and that's all that matters. He’s adopted a very unique style, as a way of standing out from the herd and attracting the ladies, considering he doesn’t have a harem of females at his beck and call. He decided to dye his hair green because it's his favourite colour and he thought it'd look cool...it does by the way! He can't afford as many chains as Mr T but the one he has he wears with pride. This is my funky zebra, he may get another piercing if the fancy takes him but for now he's happy with just two.

My artistic vision is to inspire a greater appreciation and respect for wildlife, I aim to create art that resonates with animal lovers, and highlights the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations. I use my art to portray the personality and behaviour of animals, and to invite the viewer to reflect on their own feelings towards them. I achieve this by experimenting with different artistic styles and techniques, choosing the most suitable one to communicate a particular message. Ultimately I hope to create a connection between humans and wildlife, while also expanding my own artistic abilities.
