Galway girl Painting

This work was inspired by Galway and county Clare. My Irish grandmother Katie is from rural county Galway, Ireland and her husband William Greene a musician came from county Clare. I preformed this piece using an old red Irish scarf commonly worn by women in my childhood growing up in this area. The woman face is staring out at the spectator, challenging the viewer with the ethnic and culture of the woman in the portrait. In the world we are becoming homogenised and shamed for living an ethic way or indigenous way of life or being. I am half Irish and I identify with all parts of myself but this I wanted to explore through preformed and combined with paint. I also used bees wax in the medium and cold wax. The beeswax was collected from these two counties as well. It took three years to complete this work and I feel happy with piece , we should be allowed to celebrate who we are without ridicule , to celebrate our ancestors, family members. We can accept the good and the bad of our ancestors and digest it , to try to be better people if we can. I hope this work of art becomes special to you too. Thank you for reading.
