About The Artwork

Rituals and ceremonies are a part of daily life for every Balinese people. They literally live through ceremonies. Three times a day, each Balinese makes offerings to the home temple, and every day you can witness ceremonies associated with both calendar holidays and life events, such as weddings or funerals. According to the Balinese calendar of ceremonies, there are approximately 270 official holidays a year, so it is safe to say that the life of a Balinese revolves around rituals and ceremonies. The offerings are made to appease the spirits and take the form of baskets made from palm leaves filled with flowers, coins, cookies, rice, and incense. These baskets, called Chanang, are handmade, and their contents symbolize Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, while Sang Hyang Widhi is the supreme god of Indonesian Hinduism. Once, we were in a beautiful temple on the Agung volcano and witnessed a mystical ceremony. All the people were dressed in white, and women danced among the clouds while carrying huge bowls of fruit on their heads. This ceremony became the inspiration for the plot of my painting. In fact, all-white robes are mandatory for temple-related ceremonies, such as the temple's birthday. The white rooster in the picture symbolizes purity of thoughts, just like the white clothes. A blue bull, a sacred animal in Hinduism, also accompanies the ceremony. According to legend, the bull was the mount of Shiva, and in India, it is believed that if Nandi whispers a message to Shiva in his ear, he will surely hear it. However, Bali has a completely different Hinduism, and this belief does not exist there. Also, the painting features a traditional Bali Frangipani tree. Frangipani flowers are often associated with tropical islands, including Bali. Visitors to Bali often place these flowers behind their ear or purchase souvenirs with images of the flower.

Hello, My name is Uliana Fandera. I’m from Russia, based in Bali island, Indonesia. I’m a contemporary full time artist and have been creating paintings in the abstract and surrealism style of art since 2002. I am a self-taught and independent artist. The ideas for my art work come to me from the unconscious. The moment I start drawing the first line on the canvas, I never know where it will take me. In my art works I use irony, bold, positive colors, shapes and images. There is enough pain, sadness and evil in our world and I don't want to magnify it by reflecting it in my work. I want my art work to bring joy, make you smile and move you to see the world through different eyes. The main themes of my art are: psychology, mythology, religion, mysticism, culture. I draw in the style of surrealism and abstraction because I feel maximum freedom in this style. Here I can say anything, even if it's impossible to say it. Here everyone can see their meaning, which is close to their soul and heart. This is the true intellectual art, art puzzle. Offline exhibition: Indonesia, Bali, Karangasem, Candidasa JL.
