About The Artwork

In the hushed stillness of 'Green Steel,' one finds a minimalist opus, awash in pastel tones that whisper tranquility, yet conceal torrents of unspoken emotion. This portrait, etched with layers of paint and fragments of yesterday's newsprint, is a testament to the ghostly memories that inhabit our very souls. Above this visage, a haunting tableau unfolds—a cluster of coins, the cold glint of commerce, and an emblem reminiscent of the indifferent automatons of modern life, evoking the relentless rhythm of a cash-driven society. It is a haunting melody of the mundane, a dirge of our existence's transactional nature. And then there is the title, 'Green Steel,' an enigma in itself. "Green," a hue that tantalizes with promises of prosperity and growth, juxtaposed with "steel," the unyielding armor required for survival in a world ruled by capitalism. It's a stark dichotomy, mirroring the human spirit's enduring battle within a society that measures worth in monetary terms. 'Green Steel' is a somber reflection, a mirror into the fragmented self. It speaks of the weight of existence, the struggle to reconcile one's identity within a world driven by profit margins. In this canvas, 'Green Steel' becomes a sonnet of silent despair, a haunting soliloquy that echoes the dissonance of our time.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
