About The Artwork

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is a blind aboriginal musician and a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhemland. His Foundation helps aboriginal children with social and emotional wellbeing and he is an inspiration to many, many people as well as an amazing musical talent. Ed Trost suffers from treatment resistant depression and produces artwork promoting people who identify with depression in some way, or are strong advocates for change in mental health in our society. Ed wanted to present Gurrumul in a way that everyone, including vision impaired people, could appreciate in some way – so he created this portrait with ‘Pokerwork’ which is like producing a pictorial form of braille. The relief from the dot patterns changes with the tones in the image. The darker the tone the greater the number of burned dots. This portrait of Gurrumul is dark and introspective. Close up it is ambiguous, but the further back you are from the art the clearer the image becomes. Like suffering from depression where the feeling is that you’re in a fog or a blurry environment and are trying to move yourself away from it – the further away from the depression the clearer the picture of your life and emotional wellbeing. Ed hopes that through his art he will help clarify the misconception of depression by highlighting recognisable people actively living with, or working in this important area.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Edward Trost has more than 30 years’ experience in the arts, working in a variety of media including ceramics, large scale sculpture, and animated feature films. In his portraiture, Trost renders his subject’s likeness as a collection of scorched tones, utilising a pyrographic technique to create individual burn marks on plywood. He selects subjects who have faced mental health challenges with inner strength and resilience. By highlighting recognisable people either actively working through depression or advocating on behalf of the community, Trost hopes his art will help to correct misconceptions about these debilitating illnesses.
