This painting was INSPIRED BY and painted from life on a lake, A beautiful yellow-orange-pink sunset is reflected onto the lake's surface which makes it seem like the canoe will soon be approaching the sky and ultimately heaven. That lead to it's name - Halfway to Heaven. I hope VIEWERS WILL FEEL the serenity that emanates from this work. In all my paintings, harmony between humanity and nature is my concern and in Halfway to Heaven, the iconic status of a canoe should create an overwhelming sense of relaxation and well being for the viewer. After all, I left it empty, so whoever acquires it can picture themselves in such a harmonious natural setting, The beautiful orange lilies and translucent, shimmering dragonflies should remind us all that heaven is really here on earth and the heavenly reflected sunset should confirm that beauty is all around us if only we look for it. Of course, the canoe is positioned to lead us directly into that beauty, For additional information on the the significance of the empty canoe in this painting and in art history, I invite collectors to read "The Empty Canoe is Sometimes Full" in my studio newsletter. Here's the link goo.gl/ZUzUQU TECHNICAL MATTERS: I took my color cues from the yellow-orange-pink sunset reflecting into and cooled a bit by the blues of the water. I always use acrylic paints because of their versatility. In this case I retarded the the drying time to create the reflecting sunset and swirling waters. For the contours of the canoe I applied the paint and layered it directly from the tube thus taking advantage of the quick-dry aspects of acrylics. The painting has gallery-wrapped edges of painted linen canvas and is shipped ready to hang.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
