About The Artwork

During lockdown in London, I began working with ink on watercolour paper, creating fluid shapes, working intuitively, allowing them to flow freely in a way that felt organic and spontaneous. The process slowed right down when I returned to add the lines that bound the shapes. Each line corresponded to a slow inhale and exhale – in some ways it felt like I was attempting to visualise the act of breathing. I found the ebb and flow of the lines soothing and meditative, taking me outside myself – the process felt almost hypnotic. The forms have a bio-morphic feel, suggestive of internal organs, botanical specimens or micro-biological imagery I wanted to connect with the sense of expansion and compression, the twists, and the turns of our breath, as it fills our lungs and flows through our bodies – our life force. So often we take the extraordinary act of breathing for granted – recent times have forced us to reflect. As space was limited the paintings at 76cm x 56cm were not as large as I wished, it felt like there should be a longer continuous flow and the scale was restricting this. When I was given the opportunity to work in a huge project space for a week I grabbed the opportunity and had the chance to really push the scale and created this 4.5 metre long piece - Hold Your Breath
