this painting is inspired by the famous "etching" the sleep of reason generates monsters, made by Francisco Goya in 1797. According to Goya, fantasy is the basis of all creations. If this is left to delude in an uncontrolled way, without the support of reason, it will lead to monsters and to many non-existent elements; if, on the other hand, reason is awake and combines with fantasy, in an intimate union between rule and genius, an instrument with an inexhaustible power is created. The monsters, in fact, symbolize precisely those mental forms and processes that, relegated to the abysses of the subconscious, after the sleep of reason have finally been able to reveal themselves: in this way man is not oppressed by external forces, but is in conflict with himself, troubled by these horrible visions arising from his soul.
