Impermanence (Gold) Painting

In this series, the artist uses readily available materials to create compositions that inspire presence and contemplation. Investigating impermanence, duality and human nature and working to defy the classical notions of painting and sculpture with her particular compositional technique. In addition to using mica pigment and acrylic paint, the artist this work utilises the primitive and raw quality of bitumen in this work. Bitumen- a product of decomposition of ancient plant and animal life that has been used by humans for more than 40000 years. Viscous and black bitumen and similar substances such as petroleum, crude oil and asphalt have each played a key part in constructing the houses, ships, cities and later industries that took us to the present day, where the destruction caused by excessive use of fossil fuels and overproduction of plastic has resulted in a major climate crisis. The slow-drying quality of the material allows the artist to manipulate the material in various ways, creating stretching, pooling, wrinkling and cracking textures that solidify on canvas as it dries completely.
