About The Artwork

Title: In Good Company. Diary of Song.2021 Sheila Whittam – new work A Steady Flow of Time was given to us during this last year which moved across our world, - so that we could draw aside. The waiting time continued with a great sense of lost-ness. I was watch- full during this tumultuous period - I was also transfixed with what was beaming out from the world to us on our small screens - these scenes flowed over us all. In good company there were many tentative moments, I drew closer to watch a faint light permeate the darkness, somehow it was getting in, despite the commotion. This light was as if it was a mirror being held to show us all our incredible strengths and weaknesses. I felt at times as if I was stepping out - heading to a summit during a late monsoon moon, its dark clouds moved as though trying to blot out the sun. The evening shadows were the most difficult - I retreated to nurse myself in that place of comfort – my messy well used couch - I could never share this with anyone else! Air, earth, trivia and sky – all combined in my private world in my studio at the back of the house. Time passed, and I completed the task: The final completed work which spread before me, speaking to me words of hope: A beautiful song; Ode to Spring.

Biography I work as an artist with an interest in mixed media, contemporary, non objective works - that are usually very colourful. A non representational approach allows me and the viewer to swim along into the work to find our own emotional journey. Although that sounds elusive it is a journey essential in creativity -more so that one never tires of engaging the new discoveries in these many layered pieces. The finished work is then simply mounted on raised cradled panels that do not require formal framing. Background: Sheila was a daughter of parents who were working class - coal miner and weaver, she was born and raised in Burnley, Lancashire a town in the centre of the industrial revolution north of England. Art was introduced to her from a young age by her bachelor uncle in the form of drawing the figure. Creativity remained in her mind and she was dreamy about art in school, thinking about the possibilities of being able to learn more about being an artist. At the age of 17 she married and within four years of marriage migrated to Sydney, Australia, where she began her formal education in art. Her dream was slowly emerging in her new home country half a world away from home. She then ventured into art tutoring for Tafe to begin with, then later she became Gallery Director in Bridgewater, South Australia where she set forth to curate regular exhibition by notable artists. Art practice and studio work about her own ideas continued along side of her gallery work ever preparing her work for a continuing round of solo exhibitions which are listed in her curriculum vitea as follows.
