"Inírida y Mavecure" (2023) acrylic, collage and engraving on canvas. The Mavecure Hills are a group of three monoliths (Pajarito, Mavecure and Mono) that rise above the Inírida River in southeastern Colombia. They are part of the Guiana Shield, the important ecological and geographic region between the tropical savannas and the Amazon rainforest. The indigenous Puinave people tell that Inírida was the name of a woman of dazzling beauty. One day, a man decided to go to the Mavecure Hills, where the world was born, to find the perfect concoction to make her fall in love. He found pusana and prepared a drink, but it was so strong that Inírida lost her sense of reality when she drank it. She managed to climb to the top of the pajarito hill where no one had been able to reach. When she woke up from her fainting spell, she decided to live far from humans on the hill and since then she guides the life in the jungle: the rains and the drought, the behavior of the jaguars, the crops and the rivers.

I am a Colombian artist living in Barcelona. Through art I have been able to connect with the landscapes and culture of my ancestors. I re-imagine Latin American art through historical figures, legends, landscapes and symbology inspired by the iconography of pre-Hispanic goldsmith masters. I am inspired by the revival of historical memory, the wisdom of indigenous cosmovisions and nature. My work frequently transforms landscapes into relief engravings with metallic colors that represent the mineral richness of the earth. For the last four years I have been managing Casa Jaguar /@casajaguar.studio/, an art studio in Barcelona where I collaborate with other Colombian audiovisual artists with whom I share my interest in developing a visual language that integrates pre-Hispanic art with contemporary art.
