About The Artwork

This painting began as a smaller piece—a beautiful little painting called “Dawn Light” that glowed. I couldn’t get that little work of Joy out of my mind. As I looked around the studio, I saw a big, blank 4 foot by 5 foot canvas and knew I wanted to see what would happen if I brought the smaller piece to life on a big canvas. I began to paint. The piece called for a different brush technique to bring it to life—more dry brush work to get the soft wisp of clouds, the blend from yellow to blue to white to orange with inviting softness. After much of the work had been painted, I let it rest so I could study it, listen to it, find out what it wanted to tell me. This is a common practice in many of my works—there are points when I’m not sure if the painting is done or what the painting is about and I’ve learned to listen to the paintings over the years. The painting was quiet for days. I knew it wasn’t done, but I didn’t know where to go next. The days became a week and I started getting nervous—would this be a piece that wouldn’t tell me for months or years? That happens sometimes too. And then one morning, it whispered to me—and I knew what it was about. As I looked at the painting, I saw highlights and low lights, points of energetic high contrast, passages of soft, soothing calmness, bright colors, neutrals, dark colors, light colors, quick marks and delicate lines—it was all there. The painting held the whole range of color and brushwork and the feelings that go with them. And then I really saw it. I understood it. I heard it. Within this painting are all of your emotions —joy, happiness, optimism, grief, resolve, anger, forgiveness, contemplativeness, anxiety, sadness, fear, excitement, and hopefulness. They are there all in the painting at the same time. They are safe in that canvas space. You are safe in front of this painting. As you stand or sit in front of it and gaze at this piece, you will find all of your feelings represented. The painting contains them and as you continue to gaze, the painting becomes a field into which you can move your eyes, heart, and mind until you settle into your truth. We are all those emotions all at the same time to different degrees and amplifications. The painting is one you can immerse yourself in. One, that if you get very close to it, would be all you could see. One that could change your mood just by being in its presence. One that could hold you, accept you, inspire you. One that will lift you up. One that will bring you joy, like the hope we feel at the start of a new day. This work of Joy measures 48”x60” and is painted on gallery-wrapped canvas. It arrives wired and ready for you to hang in your home or office.

Would you love some Joy? Well, you've come to the right place. My paintings have been anecdotally proven to bring Joy. Whether you choose paintings abundant with bright, vibrant colors or imbued with a calming, soft gathering of neutrals, your adding my art to your life will bring you Joy. Joy is essential to feeling balanced and restoring, especially in difficult times. I've spent the past four years learning more about the positive impact of joy and playing with how to bring that to my art. Joy brings hope and optimism, for me and for my collectors. I delve deeply into why Joy matters; how it is different from happiness; why we not only need it, but we all **deserve** it. My paintings bring positive energy wherever they are displayed. My paintings have exhibited in solo and group shows in Seattle, Virginia, Maryland, Nashville, North Carolina, and Washington DC, including at the Phillips Collection. My works are held in private collections in Seattle, New York, London, Washington DC, Virginia, California, and around the world. Born in London, England, my parents and I emigrated to the States when I was two. I hold an MFA in Visual Arts at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, an MA from The George Washington University, and a BA from Davidson College. I am married to a retired U.S. Marine, Tom, and we live in Seattle with our beloved Golden Chow, Mory, aka Studio Dog.
