This work developed out of a desire to bring the raw, gestural quality of life drawing into an oil painting. It is part of a series of paintings exploring the inner lives of women and their innate need for connection. These paintings examine the sense of disquiet felt by women when they are bereft of the fellowship of sisters and mothers. Each work shows the protagonist caught in a moment of serene anguish. The textural details in this work provide much to observe and return to. They are an allusion to the multi-layered bonds that often exist in female friendship. Sharp contrast in colour is used to convey the protagonist's soft and yet strong character as she takes a moment to sit by herself, close her eyes and just be. 'Just close my eyes'.

I am ethnically a Pakistani artist, living and working in Sydney. I am self-taught and enjoy painting landscapes and still life in oils. I allow my art practice to evolve in different directions as I discover new materials and ideas. In the past couple of years, I have been enjoying my discovery of beeswax as a painting medium and a lot of my recent work incorporates the heavy texture and subtle shifts of colour that working with wax allows. I am inspired by how light transforms objects and people. Light and shadow are two important characters that populate my work. My paintings develop slowly, in layers of varying thickness and opacity. Each stage of work is instinctive, leading to, and determining, the next. In a meditative conversation between my work and myself, the end often arrives as a revelation. I have travelled and lived for many years in Europe, the Middle East and Pakistan, so the influences in my work are varied and diverse.
