Artwork created using vintage floral cotton circa 1950, fire, wood, ash and ember - Remembering the Burning Times - Katherine Bigland Execution Date: June 6, 1615 Location: Orkney Islands, Scotland Execution Method: Strangle and Burn Katherine was accused, along with her mother Marion, of participating in ceremonies and rituals. She was also accused of causing an illness and then curing it. She was said to have gripped someone’s wrist as part of a healing. She was found guilty of the crime of witchcraft and sentenced to die. “The superior learning of witches was recognized in the widely extended belief of their ability to work miracles. The witch was in reality the profoundest thinker, the most advanced scientist of those ages. As knowledge has ever been power, the church feared its use in women's hands, and leveled its deadliest blows at her." - Matilda Joslyn Gage, 1893
