Lady of the Lake is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts a young girl with a newspaper and an umbrella as she spends a lazy afternoon floating on a still water of a lake. Musically there are many versions of tunes with the title Lady of the Lake. It might have come from an English ballad Launcelot du Lake. Missouri fiddler, John Hartford said the poem “Lady of the Lake” by Sir Walter Scott was very popular on the American frontier. I have spent many summers on Ballard Lake in Northern Wisconsin and this is a tribute to those memories of lazy summer days on the lake.
