This series was painted over a number of years at Lamas House, Brinkley, Cambridge where I stayed often at week ends through the year. Stephen Keynes OBE FLS was a great grandson of Charles Darwin and a close friend.
Between cooking for Stephen he owned a mavelous Aga, weather permitting I would paint these large pictures of his garden. I love abstraction, nature gave me the opportunity to respond to it abstractly, light, colour, shape. Water colour is such a great medium for this English Garden, I would lay the paper on the ground and put the individual colour pallets around it, stones would hold the paper down. It was soon covered in insects who came to investigate the colour. This is quite a big picture as watercolours are usually regarded as small and delicate, these paintings for me are backcloth like (I work in theatres as a choreographer).

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS. The give lectures and demonstration on the nature of creativity, perception and Mental Time Travel.
