This thought-provoking piece, on one level, is simply a depiction of a mundane everyday task. On the other hand, drying laundry - embedded traditionally as a feminine task, creates a pretext for refashioning & discussion on the role of women in the society. Clothes are in fact a mirror of actions saturated with meanings - domesticity, care, simple things in life, ephemerality and so on. Even though the object of the painting is itself a mundane task, it is painted in a semi abstract-expressionist way, thus leaving open space for asking questions such as: Can women be both strong and feminine? Do these traditional roles have to be mutually exclusive? Is there a boundary between inner and outer world? Clothesline goes beyond the painting and starts in a head-shaped black form that is partly covered with clothes, leaving the painting open for viewer's own impressions and further interpretation. This painting, created in abstract, semi-layered expressionist style, with use of bold brushstrokes and lines can definitely well-serve as a focal point or conversation starter in any space and at the same time create stylish atmosphere.
