This artwork is part of a larger series called 'More Than Flesh'. Through this series of work Gretel has endeavoured to explore the fleeting experiences that make us human. Through focusing closely on the fluidity of the human-anatomy and the flippant relationship between the mind and the body, Gretel has unpicked, celebrated and humanised the ever-changing flesh that we all find ourselves existing in. Throughout the series there is a thoughtful focus on hands; reflecting on Aristotle’s definition of the hands being “the tools of tools”. Hands have been depicted in Gretel’s work to symbolise emotions, friendship, power, control and, at times, a lack of. The hands demonstrate a volatile conflict between beholding the power to create and repair, but also the sinister potential to manufacture ones demise. You can see this through the saturated and exaggerated hands on the hero-figure. This particular piece is not only a testament to friendship, but also a testament to resilience and growth. Celebrating the strength and capabilities a human naturally beholds, and their ability to grow and share their past trauma/ experience in order to benefit another person.

Gretel Warner portrays the female nude as a lens into the complexities of womanhood within our fast-paced, social media-centric world. Her mission is to reclaim the iconic representation of the nude, celebrating the female form authentically and candidly without the filters imposed by social media's glare. Drawing inspiration from personal encounters, feelings, and recollections, her emotionally charged paintings often evolve into abstract and dysmorphic forms. Within her practice, Gretel seeks solace from the whirlwind of both digital and physical realms, offering a space for both herself and her audience to pause and reflect. Exploring emotions through a vivid spectrum of colors and alternating between refined and expressive brushwork, she delves into the fluidity of identity and the ever-shifting nature of the human psyche and physique.
