Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, gold pigments, copper pigments, and archival pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Poised between abstraction and language as a mode of representation, the painting is built up layer-by-layer and its sensuous surface is stirred up and set into motion by sweeping brushstrokes or interspersed with swirls and outbursts of color. Initial layers are almost completely obscured by subsequent ones, with oil paint and pigment prints methodically used both to inscribe grids and preserve areas of interest, as well as bare canvas, as the composition evolves. Despite the controlled character of this process, thickly applied patches of paint resist control and tend to override demarcations inscribed by masking tape. The whole social fabric of our society (receipt from the Savoy Hotel, London) is used as a point of departure and becomes reanimated and supercharged.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), and Sotheby's (Vienna). His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives in Berlin.
