"Malerei-Wohin?": My Journey through the Modern Age Within my extensive collection under the "Retro" series, there's one painting that holds a special place – "Malerei-Wohin?". In this piece, I chose to portray Jan van Eyck, the pioneer of oil painting, not in his youth but as an aged figure, leaning on a modern-day walker. The juxtaposition is not just visual but deeply symbolic, reflecting the temporality of existence against the backdrop of timeless contributions. My choice of Van Eyck was deliberate. Known as the "King of all painters," his revolutionary techniques reshaped the art of his epoch. By representing him in the twilight of life, I wanted to convey a message – even giants, who've redefined their craft, face the inevitable progression of time. But the walker, representing today's world, underscores another idea: that while figures fade, their legacies endure and continue to influence. Creating "Malerei-Wohin?" was a journey that spanned six years, from 2014 to 2020. This wasn't a mere artistic choice, but a necessity. I employed a meticulous layering technique, building the painting in almost 40 layers. Each layer, applied with precision and patience, not only added depth to the visual piece but also symbolized the layers of history, influence, and time. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, "Malerei-Wohin?" has been an inquiry. It's my contemplation on where art is headed. Starting this work in 2014 and concluding it in 2020 was not just a passage of time but a period of introspection. As the layers built up, so did my understanding of the role of artists like me – and those before me – in the ever-evolving tapestry of art. As Hakan Mandalinci, the artist behind this piece, I wish to convey that while techniques change and new forms emerge, the essence of art – the quest for meaning, purpose, and connection – remains perennial.

The Turkish-born artist Hakan Mandalinci was born in Brackenheim in 1973. As an autodidact, he taught himself all art techniques through decades of self-study. Among them are many old master techniques, forgotten ones, contemporary, and self-invented ones. He applies these techniques in his series, some of which take up to 30 years to complete, such as the series INSECTORUM, which he began in 1992 and completed in 2022. His series flow seamlessly into each other, overlapping and branching out like a tree ultimately bearing fruit with his works. In his exhibition for his new series "Paradoxon 1.0", the initial works of the latest series "Paradoxon" were displayed alongside the final works of the previous series "Retro" and "Insectorum", representing an important transition for the viewer. Mandalinci now works simultaneously on two series: the series "Paradoxon", in which he depicts his experiences, fears, and passions as chain reactions in Fibonacci numbers and formats, using all the techniques he has learned and acquired. And the series "Poets", which can be seen as a continuation of his "Insectorum" series and will likely be the first to be influenced by Pop Art. Techniques: Drawings, Oilpaintings, Sculptures, Etching, Woodprint Actual series: PRADOXON and POETS Important series: INSECTORUM, RETRO, N2W2 The artist work in Germany, Italy and Turkey Contemporary site: www.mandalinci.com Germany Wikipedia link: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakan_Mandalinci
