About The Artwork

man on the fence A man with eye-catching glasses sits in front of a chain link fence and looks worried. In contrast to his mood, his shirt is printed with yellow smileys. Even the orange of his glasses doesn't cheer him up. The fence suggests an end, a barrier where you can't go any further. All attempts to hide this state of affairs through external appearances become useless.

Ralph Hackeland was born in Cologne in 1965, later lived on Lake Constance for many years and has worked as a freelance painter, graphic artist and designer in Mannheim since studying communication design. In his figurative works, well-known, universal elements and motifs are brought together, creating a dream-like world in the new constellation. The actors seem strangely removed and seem stuck in inevitable developments. The images are snapshots of these developments and become a still image of an inner film, the further course of which is decided by the viewer.
