About The Artwork

Painted in Yan van Eyck's traditional Dutch method from the Rennaisance in the 1400's in northern Europe, this is a surreal portrait of what might have happened in an alternative history if there had been an alien invasion and, analogous to the situation in the film 'Bright,' aliens had become part of society. Wearing a white fur and ermine trimmed red brocade top with a blue, hand-woven belt and wearing the traditional Dutch headdress of the time, 'Margaret' sits for the artist in this all too familiar pose with her hand creeping over the rim of the frame's sill, invading the real world in the same way that she has invaded the alternative universe of the painting. Hand carved from solid oak moulding, this frame is made with a sill, in the style of Dutch paintings of the time. Using gesso pastiglia, the hand in this trompe l'oeil, polychromatic frame comes to life in a way that inspires unusual comments such as, 'Can I touch that, please?' With many hours of skilled work to produce the fine detail in this painting, it really is one that nobody can just walk past.

I was born in Derby (England) in the 1960's and in my 20's I worked professionally for a number of years as the City of Derby's Pavement Artist and was even on the Thames Television (UK) show 'What's My Line' as a pavement artist and beat the panel. Recently, I designed a number of indic fonts that have been used in films, books, papers, posters, magazines and so on and of the top five Punjabi fonts used on the Internet, I have the top three places with 'GHP Full', 'Gurvetica' and 'Raaj'. I now work in oils on canvas and wooden panel, including projects that use only the materials that were available at the beginning of the 15th century (you can see original 15th century works in the National Gallery so we know that this technology represents an investment that will outlive many generations to come). My styles cover Anthropomorphic and non-Representational Abstract, through surrealism to that of the works of the 15th and 16th Century Dutch and Elizabethan artists.
