“Metamorphosis” aims to capture a state of raw vulnerability, that the artist deems necessary for deep internal change. Despite its shocking first impression, there is no anguish or ill feeling in the painting, rather it is peaceful and intimate. The artist uses what he sees as the beauty of the human anatomy to show spiritual nakedness. The butterflies and the changing of day to night act as symbols of transformation. This subversion of portraiture comes at an important moment of development in the artist's practise in his pursuit of finding a new way to portray the human image. Inspired by a medical drawing of muscle groups on display at the local gym, Sesto was compelled to paint this "realistic" image of humans that remained hidden to the eye. By putting the image back into a natural context, the image shocks the viewer into life. Acting in the opposite way to 'momento mori' which shocks us into living by reminding us of death, Sesto shocks us into living by reminding us we are genuinely a living biological creature and not a conceptual state of existence. The portrait sits upon a blackened landscape that is of the boulder range iconic of the artist's home town.
