About The Artwork

Unlike most artists who basically paint the same thing over and over again with minor variations in shape and color (thus giving them a "signature style"), I get bored with one mode of abstract expression and move on to try something new very quickly. I rarely will paint more than 10 related works before moving on to try something new. This is the first painting in a what may become a new series combining elements of established minimalist language into a more organic theme. The main shapes are obviously influenced by one of the icons of modernism - Piet Mondrian, and the colors by paintings by two other currently working artists: "Red Sparrow" by Adam Henderson, and "Bubbles #2" by Andrea Kostyal. Like many of my works, this painting uses bright colors to evoke a playful and light-hearted feeling. And like almost all of my abstract paintings, it can be hung in any orientation desired. I currently have it hanging in a horizontal orientation in my living room, but originally thought I would hang it in its vertical orientation. Looks great either way!

While I was in graduate school I began to paint as a relief from stress. My art has been heavily influenced by Vasarely, Kelly, Agam, Newman and Stella so my earliest works are derivative of these artists. My works date from the mid-1970's and have evolved correspondingly to the present. In addition to being an Artist, I also have been collecting modern art since I was a teen. The first piece of art I ever bought was a reproduction of Picasso's "Femme" (which I still have and display). The next piece was a Vasarely print entitled "Folklore" (still have that too). As I have matured as a collector, I have developed a taste for original works by unknown (or relatively unknown) Artists. For me collecting art is less about investing and more about aesthetics. While I would like to own an original DeKooning or Diebenkorn for their artistic content, I know that it is unlikely I will ever have the financial means to do so. I have only produced around 180 art works since I began painting in 1975. My works are few and I do not part with them easily. Each has meaning for me for my own appreciation and enjoyment. It is my hope that you deem my work worthy of viewing and perhaps even enough so to purchase.
