When I created this painting, I was thinking about all those who strive for enlightenment but who fall short; the “near miss.” That idea brings up quite a few questions: Was the acolyte up to the task? Does the acolyte realize he has failed? Was success even a possibility? The thick impasto and moody lighting reinforce the unanswered (and unanswerable) questions.

I was born in partitioned Berlin in 1964. I remember drawing a lot as a child and making animated movies with lumpy clay dinosaurs. I have exhibited professionally for over three decades. My work is darkly humorous and melancholy in roughly equal measures. I refer to it as art in a minor key.
