I have always had a fascination with the films of the Cohen Brothers. They have a certain off centre style and none is more strange than 'No Country for Old Men' Animals appear in a number of scenes, this Pitbull dog is seen from a great distance, seemingly, through binoculars, limping away from a drugs deal gone bad in the desert. He has been 'shot' in a gun battle stops and looks back at the camera for a second, before limping on. This dog is of course an actor and has not been shot, I imagine one of his legs has been strapped up to make him limp. This I find especially interesting, how animals, and in particular' dogs feature in films as both bit and main actors. We use them to convey meaning and give weight to the emotional impact of films. I made an image of this split second in a long feature film, and it sums up for me the pathos of the animal/human relationship. This oil painting is made on a found piece of wood which had a corner rounded off. I used the colour white on the painting to continue as the colour for the frame, this extends the idea of the frame being an integral part of the finished piece. I use the word humanimal to encompass my practice, and I make all my work with special regard to the environment, using mostly re use materials to make frames. This deep box frame has no glass and is quite heavy, supplied with strong brass hanging loops.
