About The Artwork

"Of Flesh" is the final painting of my most recent exhibition "Relation" at Cider Gallery Fine Arts. This work is on 1 3/4" stretched triple-primed canvas with stretcher brace crossbars. Relation, exhibition text: Drawing from elements of the natural world and the mind-body connection, Molly Murphy creates richly textured canvases that immediately strike viewers with their physical depth, the surfaces eluding to the many layers that lie beneath. "My work is meditative in both subject and technique, beginning with broad brushed underpainting on which lavish layers of palette knife strokes are applied, deliberately carved into and layered multiple times. My current work stems from an earlier series based on the neurology of memory as it relates to abstract works of art, but now relies almost entirely on intuition and the meditative process in painting to reveal the direction of each work, rather than a rigid set of rules. Each work addresses aspects of the human experience and persistence of the ego as it exists in a world much larger than ourselves, and the finished work embraces this duality."

My current work deals with cycles of life and death as they exist in the interconnected systems between humans and the natural world. Shared Biology is an ongoing series of abstract landscapes intertwining lush plant life and waterways with lines of human interventions. This series was born of my own anxieties about adherence to prescribed social systems and anthropogenic existence. With suggestions of artificially drawn boundaries obscured within tangled and overlapping patterns, the line between existence and memory is blurred. Beginning with broad brushed glazes, layers of free-flowing lines and marks move over and under masked borders inviting the viewer to consider the movements of growth and decay within the spaces we occupy. In some works, fence-like structures weave together out of overgrowth and vines. In others, twisting plow lines and bright patches of construction orange cut through pastoral shades of green. These works push an uncomfortable beauty and vibrancy, while considering our very short time in this place and what we will leave behind. Alongside a rigorous studio practice, Molly has been a leader in the Lawrence community, dedicating time to art collectives, public projects, curation, and arts-based volunteer work. She has been a featured artist at Free State Festival, featured artist for the United Nations Association Women’s Conference KC, Visual Artist in Residence for Escape to Create in Seaside, Florida and served on the Board of Directors of the Lawrence Arts Center.
