About The Artwork

“One for Sorrow” is an original mixed media painting by the artist Michael Tierney based on the old folklore rhyme of the same title. The rhyme, originally used for counting magpies in some regions and crows in others has always intrigued the artist since childhood. There are many variations and interpretations of the wording but the underlying tones of superstition, birth, death, sex and religion are undeniable. The painting captures these themes in a wild collision of styles and colour. One for sorrow Two for joy Three for a girl Four for a boy Five for silver Six for gold Seven for a secret never to be told Eight for heaven Nine for hell Ten for the devil’s own sel’ The painting comes ready to hang with deep painted. No frame is required.
