About The Artwork

I painted this scene from life and was INSPIRED by the swirling deep blues of the lake against the soft lavenders of the cloudy sky and imminent storm. One of the clouds looks like the head of a bear as clouds sometimes do; so I pushed that while rendering. The mood of the moment is: something is about to happen! The lone boy in a canoe is looking up apprehensively at the bear/cloud while holding on for dear life to the arm of his old love-worn teddy bear. When painted the boy and his teddy playing dress-up in American Indian costumes, the significance of this moment hit me. It represented transitions - not only the transition from calm to storm, blue to lavender, fantasy to reality, but also boy to manhood, While painting, I was struck by the fact that the boy as he matured would not play with his teddy anymore. Indeed, this might be the last time. I wanted to preserve this time of innocence, fantasy and freedom when boys go from playing with their teddy bears and to men who "play" with the real "bears" in life. I hope VIEWERS will remember their own coming of age moments and be dazzled by the brilliance and fantasy of the semi-precious stone tattoos on the boy's arm and his face paint as well as the deep blues of the water to the soft lavenders of the sky. I also hope that when viewers start looking up at the sky, either painted or real, they can see things materialize Out of Thin Air. TECHNICAL MATTERS: I painted everything I saw realistically because I had no desire to alter such a beautiful moment in time. Rather, I wanted to preserve it. I used acrylic paint on linen canvas to achieve the deep blues and lavenders and also the greens and ochres of the background woods and houses. I added crushed semi-precious stones pressed into the paint for the pretend "war paint" on the boy and his teddy bear. I used them to heighten the sense of fantasy of playing Indians and to weight the boy and teddy down into the reality of the canoe lest they float away with their fantasy.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
