About The Artwork

Subject: The painting depicts the Mercado Central de Atarazanas, designed by architect Joaquín de Rucoba in the Moorish Revival style in the late 19th century, and built on the site of a former naval workshop and shipyard dating back to the Nasrid era. Description: Like Mercado I of this same collection, this painting captures the dialogue between the timelessness of architecture and the temporality of human lives. Here, though, we see the market stalls and the bounty of the sea that they sell daily, a representation of our dependance on the natural world to support us. One wonders what will become of these spaces, these people, or this society when our ongoing plunder of the natural world is complete and we are left without the support or nourishment of the water and land that gave rise to our civilization. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in the studio.
