About The Artwork

This work was inspired by a childhood memory of the artist, Patrick Gourgouillat. While visiting the city of Lyon, he walked with his mother along the Parc de la Tête d'Or. Between the gates of the zoological garden, he saw a puppet theatre at the end of a path. It is too late in the day for a show to come to life. But the memory of this 'dead' theatre remains. Another source of inspiration interferes: it is one of the Oceanides, Clytie, daughter of Ocean and Tethys. Out of spite of her love, Clytie transforms herself into a sunflower to follow the course of the Sun God. In addition to these two inspirations, the dressed mummies of the Capuchin catacombs in Palermo, Sicily (Patrick Gourgouillat often refers to these mummies in his works). In his composition, the artist breaks the square format by painting a rectangle with golden shades. On a multicoloured background, he coats the surface with gold. Using the tip of a knife, he scratches the surface to create shapes that evoke foliage: a common way of engraving messages of love on the bark of a tree... This gold, like the flaming star, contrasts with the blue of a magical night. In the distance, the moon seems to be the only observer of this surreal spectacle: the dead animate sunflowers, symbol of the sun and of love. Much later, while walking in another park in another city, p.g. reads a graffiti on a wall. A unknown person has written: 'Follow Your Sun'. All the elements are then in place to tell a story entitled: "Puppeteers In A Public Garden".

"Everything is important, everything is beautiful, everything is sad. Where do we start if we choose to tell life and make it a work of art? Michèle Mailhot My work is eclectic, both in its form and in the use of media. In general, I work in "series". I think that one of the ways of making things interesting is through diversity: the styles as well as the techniques are varied. It can be the animal world [The Animals], societal criticism [Human Behaviour], comic strip-like drawing [Mr Doggy], crazy images as if from a dream or nightmare [Short Stories], gentle melancholy [Sky Blue] or, based on my own experience, phantasmagorical worlds in a dazzling frenzy [Viva La Vida]. I am currently working on the latter series. These series are very different from each other. What interests me are the variations in energy that they imply for me. So I go from one thing to another like one goes through experiences. This is often what happens in art in general and in life in particular.
