Inspired by the decline in the oil industry, this led me to documenting the harbour local to me, and it's own ghosts. This harbour had at one time been home to four shipyards and a thriving fishing industry. Now with the decline in the oil, a lot of men are returning to their roots in the boats, and our shipyards have been bought and will see renovation. I enjoyed the stillness in the water and how it spoke of waiting with patience and hope. I want to take the moment I've captured and make it infinite for the viewer. So they can return to this painting as a retreat into a warmth and quiet stillness whenever they need to escape. The moments that make up a sunrise are brief and transitory. I want that moment to never end.
Acrylic allows me to work rapidly and keeps my momentum up during the creative process, and the charcoal gives a deep organic texture to the underdrawing which informs the latter stages of the work. I work in such vivid colours so I can connect emotionally with the viewer.

I grew up around the coast lines of England and Scotland, and spent 18 years working offshore. When this career came to an end I returned to paintiing and drew upon my experiences in my landscape. I work to convey my emotions to the viewer, allowing them to feel the portrayed landscape as I did.
