Saint Jerome (Self-portrait) Painting

After suffering from a very serious Covid, Jesús Manuel became very thin and it seemed to him that his figure reminded him of the "Saint Jerome" painted by Jusepe Ribera, taking the opportunity to self-portrait heself with the attributes of the translator of the Vulgate: He was a cardinal (red cloak), great penitent (he hit his chest with a stone) and reflected on death (skull) and the passion of Christ (crucifix), and the open book in reference to the Latin translation of the Bible. In this way he has managed to bring to our contemporaneity a classical theme that was widely treated in the 15th to 17th centuries. This has supposed a confrontation with the Italian naturalism of the 17th century. Unlike Caravaggio and his school, which surrounded their figures with a black background, in the series The Blanche Line they surround themselves with a white background, although perhaps their intention was the same as that of Jesús Manuel (to symbolize the loneliness of the human being).
