About The Artwork

This body of work re-imagines real women I've found in antique photographs from the 1930's as "Saints". This time period is particularly interesting to me because one of my grandmothers was forced to keep her marriage a secret since, as an elementary school teacher, the school policy prohibited women from working after they were married. Only single women were allowed to teach/work. This policy seems draconian when contrasted with current cultural rules about gender roles but remnants of this kind gender inequality still exist. St. Subria is a combination of an archival printed antique photo of a real woman from the 1930’s and a painted body and surroundings. Leather, cotton and Lamé cording “binds” the figure and extends around the canvas edges.

Artist Statement- My artwork takes you to imaginary worlds that are yet to be fully explored. Through my two and three-dimensional works, I explore the struggles and beauty of being human while providing glimpses into our cultural landscape, myths, and the human psyche. I draw inspiration from my love for antique items, furniture, clothing, architecture, and vintage photographs. My sensitivity to nature, color, and light also influences my work. I use a combination of painting, collage, sculpture, and photography to connect the past, present, and future. My pieces incorporate a range of mediums, including oil and acrylic paints, ink drawings, hand-marbled papers, cast-off domestic objects, fabric, vintage portraits, and contemporary digital photographs.
