Sali: "Child of a country where people can’t draw straight lines or use symbols.” 1949 Born in Trabzon, Turkey 1970-1974 Studied painting at Istanbul Atatürk Educational Institute 1976-1981 Master’s degree in painting at Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts 1978-1987 Lecturer at Marmara, Uludağ and Anadolu universities 1984 Proficiency in Art (doctorate) 1986 Associate professor 1987 Resigned from his university post to begin a new journey as Painter Sali 24 hours a day At the age of 2 he began to draw pictures on the walls of the house and the wooden walls of the kom (alpine hut) using coloured stones which he picked up in stream beds and pieces of charred wood from the fireplace. In ancient cities In the streets In bars In studios he has produced more than ten thousand drawings, gouaches and oil paintings. The selfs within him have flowed into worlds outside, confronting them, passing from ring to spiral. “It is just the moment to shed two tears and make the sea overflow” – After reading these words by Sali in 1987, Cemal Süreya wrote, “Sali is the first person in the world to make the sea overflow with two teardrops.” In 1990 Cemal Süreya described him as “Color crazy Sali”. In 1995 the American critic Don Anderson wrote, “Sali indicts the confusion of love and lust in the underdeveloped countries. He offers us the sincerity of untamed emotion.” In Datça in 1995, when Daniel Ferguson, the friend and biographer of Francis Bacon, saw Sali’s catalogue he leapt up and told Sali, “Give me a hundred paintings and I will hold an exhibition in whichever gallery you choose.” His exhibition in the Grand Gallery at the National Club in New York in 2001 was visited by thousands of people and attracted widespread interest. Ahmet Ertegün, Jeffrey Steiner, Alton James Jr each gave receptions in Sali’s honour. He was pressed to stay in America, but September 11th intervened.
