About The Artwork

Santa Fe, New Mexico has wonderful light and I wanted to capture this in a small series of artworks made from drawings and colour studies. A perfect place to create compositions that contain many of the key elements that I am attracted too such as shadows, warm colours, shapes and leading lines, the contrast of the bright blue sky and the white buildings make for interesting compositions.

Tom Voyce (b. 1989) is an established UK painter with international exposure. His subject matter comprises of a variety of different themes such as airports, railway stations, roads and bridges and other places of transit. Voyce’s compositions consistently demonstrate an interest in the formal elements of composition: structure, perspective, shape and light. His paintings are accounts of fleeting moments within a landscape; the fall of light on a building, or the shadows cast by a motorway flyover. The strength in these pieces lies not in their faithful depiction of a landscape, but in their suggestion of a sense of place, of being present within a particular space at a particular moment. Artists such as Edward Hopper and Richard Diebenkorn have been immensely influential in his development, as have more contemporary artists- American painter Ben Aronson amongst others. Hopper's proverb, "if you can say it in words, then there's no reason to paint it", forms a principal part of my attitude towards the uniquely communicative purpose of art. His latest body of work entitled 'In Transit' is influenced by travel and place, exploring the landscapes and cityscapes of Canada, the United States, Fiji and New Zealand. www.tom-voyce.com tomrlvoyce@gmail.com
