Self portrait Painting

I was challenged by a family member to paint a self portrait, as someone susceptible to criticism and comments from my superiors I decided to take on the challenge. When I showed it upon completion I was bombarded with criticism for having tried to paint myself as a black man, I promise that was not my motive, I painted the portrait in artificial light and with a reduced palette, mainly greens and browns, my objective was not to paint myself as somebody else, I saw myself, my scars, my glasses. I did not attempt to see myself as somebody else, I believe in the act of creating a self portrait one starts to peel back our societal masks, this was my first attempt in many years and may have exposed the inner African (I have lived close to a quarter of my life on the African / Arabian continent) within me, but I see myself slightly caricatured.
