I found an odd size of wood at my usual haunt. At the time, this 5' x 5' piece was larger than my past work. I remember feeling excited about this new size and having a much larger canvas to work with. I immediately knew I had to paint as soon as I returned home. I remember feeling the grain of the wood, examining its grooves and hues and knowing that these aspects would inspire me. After opening all of my paints and materials, the pungent odor brought feelings of comfort and familiarity and my excitement grew. I paint. I felt drawn to red, so I painted with red. I remember the muscle memory of strokes and motions during the creative process and I was pleased. I created fast and added little touches here and there that made me giggle and smile to myself: I knew this was going to be good. I stopped. Took a few steps back and realized I released all of the excitement of the day on that wood. I painted. Sem Costura is Portuguese for "Seamless." It represents fluidity of freedom of mind and motion to create something that seems untouched. Sem Costura explains that there is no beginning and no end in the work, just as there is no division between emotion and physical action. I do not think. I paint.

In my interdisciplinary practice, I delve into the complexities of labor, luxury, and materiality, using my autonomous and chosen labor as a means of expressing care and elevating the luxury of materials, subjects, and concepts. I often incorporate personal artifacts and perspectives of underrepresented groups to bring attention to these perspectives in public spaces and challenge traditional notions of luxury. Through abstraction and materialization of information, I create a nuanced exploration of the subtext and transparency of these themes, layering them together in my growing body of work to challenge the traditional understanding of labor, materiality and luxury. My artistic process is driven by the desire to understand and challenge the way we perceive these concepts and how they relate to one another.
